We were delighted to be named as a finalist for the Financial Services Company of the Year award at Scottish Financial Enterprise’s (SFE) annual event on Thursday, 25 October. Sadly, we were unable to convert this to a win, as Barclays Scotland came out on top. It’s hard to compete with a company creating 2,500 jobs and redeveloping a run-down area of Glasgow! Close, but no cigar.

To be honest, to be considered in the same category (there are only two awards on the night) as the other finalists – Barclays, Clydesdale Bank, Origo and Previse – was a real honour, particularly when we saw the videos showcasing each company’s highlights. Thanks to Dan and the whole SFE team for organising a fantastic event.

I’m immensely proud of the work our team has done in the past year to allow us to be mentioned in the same breath as these other fantastic companies. We were shortlisted for our approach to staff engagement, for commitment to our intern/graduate programme and for our international strategy.

Apart from seeing our little agency’s showcase video shown alongside the big boys, the highlight of the evening for me was listening to the stories of the host Gyles Brandreth. Unfortunately, Gyles didn’t sport one of the hideous jumpers that made him a TV celebrity back in the 1980s. But he did make us laugh with his own brand of storytelling. And he was a true gent in agreeing to stay behind and take photographs with some of his fan club (see below), even though some younger members of the Copylab team had no clue who he was!

For those of you interested, here’s the video shown to the 600-strong crowd at the dinner. Spot the cardboard-looking expression towards the end!
